We Love Our Sea

5 Reasons why sharks and rays are in danger.

1

Slow Reproduction

Sharks in general reproduce slowly, but even within this group there is variation. However, when a species is put under pressure from threats such as fishing, habitat loss, climate change and persecution, those that live fast and die young, like sardines, are more likely to survive than species that live slow and die old, like sharks. Their biological characteristics are such that they can’t support losses from large-scale fishing. Sharks need help from us to ensure that they aren’t pushed to their biological limit.

2

Overfishing

Sharks and rays – reproduce more slowly than others, making them more vulnerable to fishing pressure. If we kill sharks more quickly than they reproduce, we are overfishing; their numbers will dwindle and we won’t be able to catch many sharks in the future. Overfishing is a problem for both sharks and us.

3

Habitat Loss

When an area of ocean or coastline is changed or degraded beyond the point that it can serve as a home for the species that live there, or is even destroyed entirely, that’s habitat loss. There are various ways that the habitats used by sharks are altered or destroyed. Again, some are direct, like cutting down mangroves or trawling fishing nets over reefs, and others are indirect, such as pollution, which might affect water quality to the extent that the water becomes uninhabitable.

4

Climate Change

By releasing greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, humans are changing the global climate in ways that are affecting the marine environment in terms of weather patterns, water temperature, sea level, ocean chemistry, currents, coastal erosion and the frequency of storms. Scientists recently made predictions that two shark species in Australia, for example, may move southwards – away from the equator – at a rate of 40 miles per decade to escape warming waters. And scientists are already finding evidence that fish are moving polewards in this way, so their predators – like sharks and rays, seabirds and marine mammals, among others – will have to follow them.

5

Persecution

Generally people have the impression that sharks are bloodthirsty murderers, even though they kill fewer people each year than bees, hippos, cars and even selfies do. This loathing means that people kill sharks not only to use or sell their body parts, but for a number of other reasons too: simply out of dislike; because of the perceived threat they pose to humans and fishing gear; in a misguided attempt to protect fishery resources; or for recreation.

OUR MISSION

Exceptional Quality, Least Environmental Impact.

BRAND

logonoword.png

There are many ways in which we can learn how to be more sustainable since it is very hard to be 100% sustainable with fashion. This is something that both Brands and their customers have to work on hand in hand if we want change.

Our aim is to make clothes in a way that is less harmful to the environment and humans, trying not to leave a negative footprint.

FAIR FASHION

It is very important for us to be able to create the highest quality product causing the least harm to the environment as possible. Because of this, we always are in search of the best possible fabrics using organic cotton, recycled polyester, and vegan products to design our clothes.

Our product is now mainly apparel, but it is our mission, through our on-going work, to create the most high-quality wetsuit possible. There is so much waste on this planet, so we want to make use of the fact that people throw away old wetsuits and replace them with a new one. We'll soon be proud to announce the new Zela wetsuit!
